Presbyterian Court Weighs Property Battle in California

A Presbyterian court, in a case with implications for dozens of congregations exiting a denomination divided over homosexuality, convened on Thursday to decide if a California parish may break away with property worth millions of dollars.

Testimony began before the Synod of the Pacific, consisting of ministers and church elders from throughout the West, on a case stemming from a decision by the Community Presbyterian Church of Danville, an affluent San Francisco suburb, to join a more conservative denomination.

A San Francisco-area church governing body agreed in 2010 to allow the Danville congregation to keep real estate that had been appraised at nearly $14 million after its parishioners voted to split from the mainline Presbyterian Church U.S.A.

Critics of the move, however, have argued that the regional governing body lacked authority to approve the property transfer.

"We are here today because we believe the Presbytery of San Francisco has made an unauthorized gift of property," Joan Blackstone, a retired lawyer and church elder who represents opponents of the property transfer, said in opening statements.

Thursday's trial highlights deep divisions within the parent church and its 2 million members, as well as other mainstream Protestant denominations, over the ordination of gay clergy and blessing of same-sex unions.

Although it does not allow ministers to perform same-sex marriages, the Presbyterian Church allows its ministers to bless gay unions.

The synod's trial, held in a hotel banquet room near the San Francisco Airport, will decide whether the presbytery properly used the church's so-called "gracious-dismissal" policy to allow the Danville parish to leave with its buildings and more than 7 acres of land held in trust for the Presbyterian Church U.S.A.

The committee of local ministers "considered, prayed about it and decided the buildings should continue to be used by the Danville congregation as they continue to do God's work," the Rev. Joan Huff, a San Francisco minister who represents the presbytery, told the tribunal. "Grace is not always fair. Grace cannot be monetized. It cannot be bought, earned or won."

"It if could, it would cease to be grace," she said.

Blackstone urged the 10 commissioners hearing the case to consider the impact of their decision on church groups throughout the nation struggling with how to divide property.

OPENED CLERGY TO HOMOSEXUALS

The Presbyterian Church U.S.A. formally opened the ranks of its clergy to homosexuals last spring in a move that triggered a schism, prompting some opposed to gay clergy to form a new denomination, the Evangelical Covenant Order of Presbyterians.

The Presbyterian Church's pension board further alienated some conservative congregants this month by approving benefits for same-gender partners and their children starting next year.

Upset over differences in biblical interpretation of social issues, including questions of gay life and abortion, the Danville congregation began separating from the parent church in 2010.

They want to join yet another offshoot denomination, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. That church believes "unrepentant homosexual behavior is incompatible with the ordination vows."

"This case is going to establish a precedent of sorts in the minds of people in this denomination," Blackstone said in her opening trial statement. "It's going to be considered by congregations as they request to be dismissed."

The Kentucky-based denomination has endured other splits in its history, including schisms over slavery and the ordination of women. But the Rev. Gradye Parsons, the highest-ranking official in the church general assembly, said some congregations that have left the fold during the past 20 years have rejoined.

"I think it's sad that people are leaving," he said. "I see it more as a separation than a divorce and hope someday we can be reconciled."

The Danville church, founded in 1865, consists of about 1,800 members.

The Rev. Scott Farmer, the church's senior pastor, served on a task force charged with writing the "gracious-dismissal" policy, Blackstone said. She questioned whether Farmer had a conflict of interest when the Danville church was the first to ask to be dismissed under the policy.

Farmer could not be reached for comment.

A website for the Presbyterian Lay Committee, a conservative advocacy group, listed 35 congregations that had started the process of separating from the denomination since July. The First Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs, with more than 4,000 members, is the largest to take part in the exodus.

The synod is expected to issue a written decision next week.

Pope says communism does not work in Cuba

Andrew Medichini / AP

Pope Benedict XVI waves as he boards a plane on his way to a six-day visit to Mexico and Cuba, at Rome's Fiumicino international airport, on Friday

By msnbc.com news services

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE -- Pope Benedict said on Friday communism no longer works in Cuba and the Catholic Church was ready to help the island find new ways of moving forward without "trauma."

Speaking on the plane taking him from Rome for a trip to Mexico and Cuba, the pope told reporters: "Today it is evident that Marxist ideology in the way it was conceived no longer corresponds to reality."

Responding to a question about his visit to the island, a communist bastion 90 miles off the coast of the United States for more than 50 years, Benedict added: "New models must be found with patience and in a constructive way...we want to help."

Benedict, who is due to arrive in Cuba on Monday after a three-day visit to Mexico, called for freedom of conscience and freedom of religion on the island.

Also on Friday, Benedict promised to "unmask the evil" of drug trafficking in Mexico, which has been wracked by a surge in gang violence over the past five years.

'We are all fed up'
The pope gave a forceful response when asked on board his plane about drug trafficking in Mexico, which has generated violence claiming some 50,000 lives since 2007.

"We must do whatever is possible to combat this destructive evil against humanity and our youth," he told reporters. "It is the responsibility of the Church to educate consciences, to teach moral responsibility and to unmask the evil, to unmask this idolatry of money which enslaves man, to unmask the false promises, the lies, the fraud that is behind drugs."

Car bomb targets Mexico newspaper office

The relentless bloodletting was in the mind of many of those waiting to see Benedict in Leon, a Roman Catholic stronghold that has avoided the worst of the brutal turf wars between drug cartels and clashes with security forces.

"The Church has to address the violence, give us a message that there can be change. We are all fed up, our society has been hurt," said Ruben Santibanez, a local doctor.

Christophe Pierre, the Vatican's diplomatic representative in Mexico, said Benedict would not ignore Mexico's plight.

"Violence is being talked about, we can't hide it, but there is a lot more to Mexico than the violence, and the desire to live in harmony is precisely what the Holy Father is coming for," he said on Thursday.

Images: Mexico gets ready for Pope's visit

Crowds of devout Mexicans readied campsites in Leon in preparation for a massive outdoor mass on Sunday where hundreds of thousands of people are expected.

Benedict hopes to rally the faithful in the world's second most populous Catholic nation as more Mexicans are lured to evangelical Protestant churches.

But the German pope faces a challenge generating the same kind of fervor as his charismatic Polish predecessor, Pope John Paul, who was beloved in Latin America and drew pulsating crowds whenever he criss-crossed the region during his 27-year papacy.

Abuse scandals
Highlighting the growing religious divisions in Mexico, a large Protestant church in Leon held a service with hundreds of worshipers on Thursday, prominently displaying a sign that read "We are not Roman Catholics."

The Vatican has been stung by accusations of child abuse by priests in parishes around the world - including revelations about Mexican religious leader Marcial Maciel, who founded a prominent Catholic order, the Legionaries of Christ.

Maciel, who died in 2008 at the age of 87, was disgraced by allegations of sexual abuse and drug addiction.

Heaven scent: Pope orders eau de cologne that he alone may wear

During the pope's visit, religious scholar Bernardo Barranco will present a new book by ex-Legionaries with scores of leaked Vatican documents the authors say prove the Holy See knew about Maciel's molestation of young boys and morphine use for decades.

The hacker group Anonymous in Mexico crashed at least two of the websites for Benedict's visit to Mexico on Thursday, claiming his trip is a political move to support the president's party.

Anonymous Mexico said in a video posted on social media sites that the pope's visit will cost Mexicans money that could be better spent on the poor, and is meant to support the PAN in the July 1 presidential election. PAN candidate Josefina Vazquez Mota trails front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party by at least 10 percentage points in most polls.

Tehran forces Iranian Jews to join anti-Israel Global March

The Islamic regime in Tehran was not satisfied with the public support the Iranian Jewish community?s was forced to confer on the Global March to Jerusalem for which Iran is recruiting Islamists worldwide. Now, the event?s organizers, Majlis Speaker Hossein Sheikh-ol-Eslam and Salim Ghafouri, have ordered the community to send a Jewish delegation to march with the Islamist groups in Lebanon, debkafile?s Iranian sources disclose.
The delegations are scheduled to mass on the Lebanese and Jordanian borders with Israel and at West Bank and Gaza checkpoints on March 30, when Israeli Arabs mark Earth Day every year.

Iran?s ancient Jewish community of around 15,000 souls (9,000 in Tehran, 4,000 in Shiraz and 1,300 in Isfahan) has been living in fear of reprisals should Israel or the United States carry out a military operation against the country?s nuclear facilities. ?Now, they face a fresh danger of murder and abduction by Hizballah and Palestinian gunmen and terrorists in Lebanon.
Jewish communal leaders were instructed by the Iranian authorities this week to have at least 10 young men aged 18 to 22 ready for the march. They were to be given ?the honor? of acting as vanguard for breaking through the Lebanese-Israeli border fence and leading a mass incursion across the border.
They suspect that this ploy is meant to prevent Israeli soldiers from firing on the trespassers for fear of killing the Jewish contingent, while at the same time, exposing them to violence when the event is over at the hands of al-Qaeda linked Palestinian groups under Hizballah protection.

The Salafi doctrine held by the al Qaeda killer Muhammad Merah who murdered four Jews, including three children, in Toulouse Monday, is rife in the south Lebanese Palestinian Ain Hilwa refugee camp. The most active are two Palestinian jihadist groups, the Abdullah Azzam Brigades, which now and then shoots rockets into northern Israel, and Jund al-Sham, which is closely tied to al Qaeda branches in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq, where they call themselves Osbat al-Ansar.

The two terrorist groups are the bosses of the Safouri Quarter of the camp.
Our sources report an Iranian scheme to send the Jewish marchers on a visit to Ain Hilwa to show their solidarity with the most radical Palestinian cause.

Last week, Jewish leaders were obliged to sign a declaration of solidarity with the Global March and condemnation of Israel. The text put before them for signing was as follows: We the Jews of Iran strongly condemn the barbaric crimes of the occupation regime in Palestinian and declare the Zionist state in violation of the principles of Our Teacher Moses and the Will of God. We are totally at one with the aspirations of the heroic Palestinian people.?
Signed: Dr. Syamak Mare Dedeq, Jewish Member of Parliament, and Rabbi Mashallah Golestani-Nejad, described as the Chief Rabbi of Iran.
debkafile?s Iranian sources add: Tehran is the main bankroller and live wire of the Global March against Israel?s borders and claims to have rounded up Islamist delegations from five continents to support the Palestinians. Seventy sympathizers are on their way to Lebanon, Syria and Jordan from India, Malaysia, Pakistan and other Asian countries.
To mark the event, Tehran staged a cartoon contest. The winner drew around the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem a wall modeled on the fences of Auschwitz.
Both the organizers are members of the Ministry of Intelligence MOIS with long experience?of managing Iranian activities on behalf of Arab and Palestinian terrorist groups. Sheikh-ol-Islam, while holding the post of Deputy Speaker of Parliament, also coordinates Tehran?s relations with the Lebanese Hizballah.
On Feb. 26, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei proclaimed the launching of the Global March to Jerusalem an expression of Iran?s policy for strengthening ?resistance operations? against Israel and guarding Palestinian interests.

Molecular Cloning of Human Prostate Cancer Cell Line KLK7 Gene ...

posted by:

Tumor Research

[Abstract]

Prostate cancer is the most common malignancy in men .Both the morbidityand mortality rate from prostate cancer rise almost exponentially in recent years. Many researches showed that its tumorgenesis and biological characters are closelyrelated to many genes. Growing evidence suggests that many kallikreins areimplicated in it. Human kallikrein gene 7(KLK7; HSCCE), also named HSCCE/PRSS6, is a new member of the human kallikrein gene family, which was found inskin first, had drawn great attention and been undertaken wide studies in manymalignant tumors. Objective The aim of this study were : (1) to determine whether KLK7 gene isexpressed in prostate cell line PC-3. (2) to investigate whether DHT had theeffects on KLK7 mRNA level in PC-3 cell in vitroMethods (1) Total RNA was extracted from human prostate cell line PC-3 andhuman kallirein7(KLK7) gene cDNA was amplified by PCR after reverse-transcription using Oligo (dT) primer. Amplified products was ligated to PGEM-TEasy plasmid vector. The recombinant plasmid was transfered to the competentE.coli DH5?. Indentified by enzyme digestion, KLK7 gene in recombinant plasmidwas sequenced by sanger dideoxy-mediated chain-termination method. (2)Thehuman prostate cell line PC-3 were cultured at 37?in a CO2 incubator with F12culture medium and were divided into seven groups by different DHT stimulatingconcentrations of 0M?10-9M?10-8M?10-7M?10-6M?10-5M and 0.01% Ethanol.Following culture in day 1, day 2, day 3 and day 4, MTT method was applied toobserve the cell proliferation . RT-PCR was engaged to find the KLK7 level in thePC-3 cell under the different concentrations of DHT stimulation. Results (1)The cloned kallikrein7 gene is about 762 bp in length. A sequencecomparison of this with the reported kallikrein7 sequence in the Genebankindicated that the cloned prostate cell line PC-3 KLK7 gene has two nucleotidedifference. (2) In day 1 of culture, the cell treated with 10-8mol/l DHT grew fast, there was significant increase of OD in this group compared with the control group( P < 0.05). In day 4 of culture , there were significant increase of OD in thegroups treated with 10-9mol/l?10-8mol/l?10-7mol/l?10-6mol/l DHT compared withthe control group ( P < 0.05) except the group treated with 10-5mol/l DHT (P >0.05). (3) RT-PCR showed that the group treated with 10-9mol/L ?10-8mol/L?10-7mol/L?10-6mol/L DHT had no KLK7 mRNA expression. TheKLK7 mRNA OD value in control group and 10-5mol/L DHT group was 0.9061?0.9367 respectively compared with control gene .Conclusion Our study indicated: (1) KLK7 gene is expressed in prostate cellline. It may be provide the evidences for further studies of the KLK7 gene inprostate cancer. (2) Lower concentration of DHT can enhance the proliferation ofPC-3 cell. Its optimal concentration is 10-8mol/L. (3) the expression of KLK7mRNA may be regulated by androgens and has certain relations with prostatecancer cell growth. Further studies are required to prove this hypothesis.

Google Maps improves 3D models of major landmarks

Image
Google Maps has long sported 3D models of major world landmarks. Some of them, however, left something to be desired. For example, the Piazza del Duomo in Florence was missing its signature domes. Now it's been drastically improved with a series of smooth shaded roofs. Plenty of other landmarks have also been revamped, including the Sydney Opera House, White House and the Petronas Towers. Sadly, there's word as to when or if the new models will land in the mobile version. To check them out yourself hit up the source link.

Infrared and microwave satellite imagery from NASA have been providing forecasters at the National Weather Service valuable data on weather system that has potential to bring severe weather to the south central U.S. over the next several days.

A large upper-level storm system is approaching central Oklahoma and moving east, into eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, bringing the threat of heavy rain, gusty winds, and tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were posted early on March 19 in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. Oklahoma also has a flash flood warning centered on Oklahoma City. Texas had a tornado warning near Midland earlier in the day.

The National Weather Service issued warnings today, March 19, 2012 for eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas which stated

"Dangerous/potentially life-threatening flooding is expected." Forecasters at the National Weather Service expect 4 to 8 inch rainfall totals through Wednesday, March 21, and possibly moderate and major river flooding. For more information on the warnings, visit: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/tsa/dsp/dsp.php. For the audio version of the National Weather Service forecast for eastern Oklahoma and northwestern Arkansas, visit: http://www.srh.noaa.gov/images/rtimages/tsa/crs/mp3/OKCHAZARD.mp3.

Edward Olsen of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. creates imagery using data from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument that flies onboard NASA's Aqua satellite. Olsen created imagery from a satellite overpass during the morning hours today, March 19. He said, "The infrared and microwave images show the early phase of the convection blow-up."

A movie was created using infrared and visible data from NOAA's GOES-13 satellite from March 17 to March 19 at 1740 UTC (1:40 p.m. EST). When the AIRS data was matched with the GOES satellite animation, the blow-up of convection (rising air that forms thunderstorms) appears to have begun around 0245 UTC on March 19 (10:45 p.m. EST on March 18). In the satellite movie, the strong front comes together and resembles an upside-down arrow at the end of the animation on March 19.

GOES-13 is operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the movie was created by NASA's GOES Project, located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md.

"The line on the Eastern edge of the active region is well established by the time of the AIRS overpass images (at 0853 UTC on March 19)," Olsen said. In the AIRS infrared image, strong convection (strongest on the eastern/leading edge) and cold cloud tops extend from Midland, Texas over the Texas Panhandle and Western Oklahoma and Kansas. The AIRS infrared image on March 19 at 0853 UTC (4:53 a.m. EST) showed cloud top were colder than -63F/-52.7C, indicating strong, high thunderstorm cloud tops that reached high up into the troposphere.

The NASA microwave imagery showed that the strongest convection and likely heavy precipitation was taking place in Oklahoma, just to the east of the Texas/Oklahoma border North of where I-40 crosses that border.

Severe weather is expected in that part of the country over the next couple of days and NASA and NOAA satellites continue to provide forecasters with valuable data.

Real Spit: Ever wonder what goes on during the course of your favorite rapper's day? On his latest mixtape, 4Eva N a Day, Big K.R.I.T. gives fans an intimate look into his life. From the moment he wakes up on the first track, appropriately titled "8:04 AM" to the tape's second to last track "5:04 AM," K.R.I.T. spreads his soul over the course of 17 selections.

"I just wanted to do a sequel to Return of 4Eva, instead of it being just a group of songs, I said, 'Man, let me do something conceptual,' " K.R.I.T. tells Mixtape Daily of the motivation behind his 2012 tape.

Last March the Meridian, Mississippi MC/producer dropped his critically acclaimed Return of 4Eva. Though his releases are considered mixtapes, K.R.I.T. presents his works like albums. There are no freestyles, only well-thought-out songs of the rapper's own original production. On his last tape, songs like "Highs & Lows," "Dreamin' " and "The Vent" found K.R.I.T. bypassing the standard rap fare of money, cars and clothes, choosing to give more substance in his music. 4Eva N a Day takes the formula futher.

"4Eva N a Day was pretty much a day in the life of as far as me," he said. "So I tried to put my whole life on wax, from the moment I wake up, real life conversations with my father, my actual grandmother, there's audio of her talking before a song. There's people in my life that are actually on this tape."

"Boobie Miles" is an inspirational hymn inspired by the Texas high school running back whose real-life story inspired the 1990 critically acclaimed book "Friday Night Lights" and the movie of the same name. On the track, Krizzle urges listeners to put God first, a spiritual theme that carries the tape throughout. The title track finds the self-proclaimed King Remembered in Time celebrating his relative victories in the face of haters.

On "Handwriting," the Def Jam signee vents about label woes, and on "Insomnia," he seeks some sexual healing to help ease the stresses of his day. If you let K.R.I.T. tell it, the life of an up-and-coming rap star isn't all that it's cracked up to be, but you also get the feeling that the rookie wouldn't have it any other way.

Joints to Check for
» "Handwriting"- "People know drinkin' is kinda my thing, I drink. You know how you get when you got a couple of drinks in you it's like, 'All right, this is really how I'm feelin' this is what I'm get off my chest. I'm at the bar on that song, just talkin' to a random stranger, so it's me kinda battling with being artistic and being creative at the same time having to be a business man and understanding dates and times and things of that nature."

» "1986"-"The significance of 1986, one me being born and I just wanted to incorporate some things that would make my year special. Of course Martin Luther King Day being made official in 1986, Run-DMC, they being named the first hip-hop group in the Top 10 as far as charts, Jordan the 63 points in the playoffs and then even the Paid in Full, we're talking about Rakim. It's like, man, a lot happened in 1986 for me to be like, 'Arggh this the best year ever.' Then I came about, so I'ma celebrate it."

Despite progress, 1 in 4 high schoolers drop out

The last straw for 17-year-old Alton Burke was a note left on his door. The high school dropout picked up the phone and re-enrolled at South Hagerstown High.

Burke missed roughly 200 days of class, but Heather Dixon, the student intervention specialist who left the note, never gave up on him.

Aggressive efforts to prevent students such as Burke from dropping out contributed to a modest 3.5 percentage point increase nationally in the high school graduation rate from 2001 to 2009, according to research to be presented Monday at the Grad Nation summit in Washington. The event was organized by the children's advocacy group America's Promise Alliance founded by former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

The graduation rate was 75 percent in 2009, meaning 1 in 4 students fails to get a diploma in four years, researchers found. That's well below the organization's goal of 90 percent by 2020.

Researchers found that the number of "dropout factories," schools that fail to graduate more than 60 percent of students on time, had dropped by more than 450 between 2002 and 2010, but that 1,550 remain.

"Big gains are possible if you work hard at it, and if you don't focus on it, you're going to go backward," said Robert Balfanz, a report author and director of the Everyone Graduates Center at the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University.

The increase in graduation rates was primarily because of growth in 12 states, with New York and Tennessee showing double digit gains since 2002, according to the research. At the other end, 10 states had declines: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, New Jersey, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Rhode Island and Utah.

So far, only Wisconsin has met the 90 percent benchmark, although Vermont is close.

"This year's report proves struggling schools are not destined to fail," said Education Secretary Arne Duncan. "The reality is that even one dropout factory is too many."

The authors said there are proven strategies to tackle the problem, such as getting all students to read at grade level, raising the compulsory school attendance age to 18 and developing "early warning" systems to help identify students that might be at risk of later dropping out.

In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama encouraged states to pass laws to require students to stay in school until they graduate or they turn 18.

It's estimated that high school graduates will earn $130,000 more over their lifetimes than dropouts, and that high school graduates will generate more than $200,000 in higher tax revenues and savings in government expenditures over their lifetime, the report said.

How to track high school graduation rates has been a contentious issue for years, with states using different methods to come up with a number. Balfanz cited this as a reason why the report does not include the names of the dropout factories. He said they will be included in a future report once all states are consistently reporting data.

States are now required to use the same method to compute graduation rates based on a Bush administration rule issued in 2008.

Nevada stood out for its low graduation rate of 56 percent, a decline of more than 15 percentage points from 2002 to 2009, the largest of any state, the report said. During Nevada's boom years, students dropped out to earn hefty paychecks parking cars, pouring concrete or serving drinks along the Las Vegas Strip.

"Today, many of Las Vegas' dropouts are out of work and unable to jumpstart the economy because they lack the required credentials," the report said.

But Balfanz said there are some signs that the state is "organizing itself against its big challenge."

The Clark County School District of Las Vegas, for example, has developed a partnership with Vegas PBS for an online program designed to help students earn missing credits needed to graduate. It also started the "Reclaim Your Future" program, which sent school employees and community volunteers door to door to persuade dropouts to return to school.

State education officials in New Mexico and Arizona point to their own graduation statistics, which show rates increasing gradually for three consecutive years.

"When we talk about the economy, there's a three-prong stool ? what are your taxes like, are you business friendly and the third piece is whether you have an education system that is creating a workforce prepared and ready," New Mexico's Education Secretary Hanna Skandera said. "And the answer for New Mexico has been 'No,' but it's an absolute commitment of ours to make that answer 'Yes.' We're on our way."

Many of the strategies encouraged by the authors have been adopted in Washington County, Md. The district has a 92 percent graduation rate, up 15 percentage points from 2000. It's made progress in recent years even as the county's unemployment rate lingered above the national average and more students needed homelessness services.

The district offers e-learning classes for credit recovery, evening classes, and a family center where pregnant teens and student parents can attend class. Student attendance and performance data are carefully tracked to identify early any students at risk. Intervention specialists develop relationships with these students, doing everything from visiting their homes to helping them connect with community mental health services.

Clayton Wilcox, the district superintendent, said that even as they work to keep students, those who drop out are warmly welcomed back.

"It's not easy to drop out. We're going to hound you. Classroom teachers are going to talk to you. Principals are going to talk to you. The guidance counselor is going to talk to you. We don't make it easy." Wilcox said.

Dixon, the intervention specialist who works with Burke, and Amy Warrenfeltz, another intervention specialist at South Hagerstown High, said some of the kids they deal with have mental health issues or drug and alcohol problems. Others struggle because they switched schools because of financial issues in their family or had a bad experience in school with a teacher or peer, they said.

Burke said it was hard to get motivated to attend class once he "got into the routine of not getting up and it became a habit."

"I was nervous coming back because of what people would say or how people would look at me," Burke said. "It's awkward when you haven't been to school in a couple weeks or whatever and then you come back."

He had met with Dixon multiple times at his house and at school, and after he dropped out, he said he was sure she would return to his home. He said he was happy when she left the note because he wanted an excuse to return to school. He now goes to school full time and takes evening classes four nights a week. He anticipates graduating this spring and wants to attend technical school in heating, ventilation and cooling.

"Before that, I wanted to come back, but I just didn't know how to come about it," Burke said.

Hong Kong director Ann Hui honoured for life's work

Hong Kong director Ann Hui will be honoured for her life's work at the Asian Film Awards on Monday, in recognition of classics such as "Song of the Exile".

Hui, the first female director to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society, is widely regarded as a pioneer of the southern city's New Wave of the 1970s and 1980s.

"Once you reach a certain age, you have to receive lifetime achievement awards," the 64-year-old joked in an interview with AFP ahead of the ceremony in Hong Kong's harbourside convention centre.

"But I can't afford to retire, so it puts me in a difficult situation.

"I'm feeling really honoured though."

Hui has churned out classic after classic in more than 30 years as a filmmaker, in a career which began with television dramas for Hong Kong station TVB and bloomed with her first feature film, "The Secret", in 1979.

Born in northeastern China's Liaoning province to a Japanese mother and Chinese father, Hui lived in Macau until she was five and then moved with her family to Hong Kong.

She studied at the London International Film School before returning to Hong Kong to start her career, an experience loosely re-told in one of her most important works, "Song of the Exile" from 1990.

The film tells a story of disorientation and loss of identity as a young Chinese woman leaves her studies in London and comes back to Hong Kong to learn about her Japanese mother's past and her own troubled childhood.

Her most recent work, last year's "A Simple Life", received worldwide acclaim with its heart-warming tale about the relationship between a young Hong Kong man and the servant who raised him.

Deanie Ip won the Best Actress Award at the 68th Venice International Film Festival for her role as the loyal servant.

"I am a Hong Konger, I was educated in Hong Kong, my career is based in Hong Kong, creating films about Hong Kong," Hui said.

"The films I've made that have been based on Hong Kong have been my best."

She said she felt a responsibility to make a "record of the culture and heritage" of the city she lives in, rather than "worrying about whether a story works commercially".

In her early years, Hui gave breakthrough roles to actors such as Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau, both of whom have become international stars.

"I feel like the past few years, my films have been received well because Hong Kongers seem to be more conscious and sensitive of their identity. I feel like there has been more appreciation," she said.

Hui is less appreciative, however, of those who connect her gender to her success.

"When I first started making films 30 years ago, people would comment that I was a woman. But strangely, when I was in television, no one ever mentioned that I was a woman," she said.

"Maybe it was because television and film were different. There were more women working in television than men. There was no split in terms of work -- everyone was considered equal."

She said there was no need to point out her gender in order to "raise the status of women".

"An ideal situation would be to not mention whether a movie was made by a man or a woman, but I guess we still haven't achieved equality between the genders.

"I think once we reach a more desirable stage, then gender won't be mentioned."

The 6th Asian Film Awards coincide with the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the Hong Kong Asia Film Financing Forum, where Asian filmmakers market their ideas to international investors.

Debut novel sets new tone in Swedish crime fiction

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Readers of Stieg Larsson and Henning Mankell have long associated Swedish crime fiction with serene landscapes, tired police inspectors and serial killers.

But in his debut novel, "Easy Money," crime writer Jens Lapidus breaks with that tradition. Instead, the 37-year-old criminal lawyer has produced a realistic, fast-paced novel about Stockholm's organized crime, seen through the eyes of the drug dealers and gang leaders he normally represents in court.

"I guess I am the next generation in crime. What I write is a kind of reaction to the traditional, what I experience as a little bit hackneyed," Lapidus told The Associated Press over a coffee in Stockholm on Thursday. "I haven't been inspired by the Scandinavian at all in my writing, but rather seen it as my antithesis."

Of course, that doesn't mean he wouldn't like to match the over-the-top sales of works such as Larsson's Millennium trilogy and Mankell's Wallander novels. In fact, Lapidus admits the hype around Scandinavian crime novels has helped open up a lot of doors for him.

"Easy Money," which was released in the U.K. last month and will go on sale in the U.S. on April 3, follows a Latino drug dealer, a Serbian henchman and a young Swede whose desperate quest for money to uphold a luxurious lifestyle takes him on a journey through Stockholm's underworld. It is the first book in Lapidus' so-called Stockholm noir trilogy, which is being translated into around 30 languages after it sold 1.5 million copies in Sweden.

The book was inspired by Lapidus' work in a Stockholm court. It stands out for using the perspective of the bad guys, but also for its descriptions of the class divides, harsh individualism and materialism that have become increasingly visible in the Swedish capital in recent years and contrasts with the traditional image of the egalitarian Nordic society.

"I think there is an image that lives on, that is 20-30 years old, of a strong Swedish welfare state, an image that maybe emerged in the 1960s and 70s," Lapidus said. "I don't think that image has been true for a very, very long time. It is an old cliche."

"Relatively speaking, the idea that Stockholm is a fairly peaceful and good place is probably true, but it is not as true as people have previously thought. The problems that exist in both American and European big cities exist here, too," he said.

Still Lapidus, who has continued to work as a criminal lawyer alongside his career as an author, said he doesn't want to engage in too much social commentary.

"I am no politician. Even if my books are critical toward society, I don't point fingers and say what the right direction is. On the contrary, I try to stand back in the books and avoid moralizing," he said.

The Swedish version of "Easy Money" was released in 2006, but translation problems delayed the English-language publication by at least two years, Lapidus said. A first translation of the book's hard-boiled language, that is infused with suburban slang and accents of various immigrant groups, didn't work, and the publisher had to hire a second translator.

Meanwhile, the book was successfully adapted into a Swedish-language film and rights for a Hollywood remake were sold to Warner Bros. The Swedish movie also helped spur international careers for director Daniel Espinoza, who directed the Hollywood production "Safe House" with Denzel Washington and lead actor Joel Kinnaman ? now lined up for the title role in the remake of "RoboCop."

In Sweden, "Easy Money" and its two sequels got so popular that Lapidus also became a well-known name in the circles he describes. He said the books in his trilogy have been the most borrowed ones in Swedish prison libraries for several years and that clients sometimes request him as a lawyer after reading "Easy Money."

"I held a seminar for a group of police in southern Stockholm and one policeman said that every time they do a raid against a gang member in Stockholm's southern suburbs they find two things; a poster of Al Paccino in "Scarface" and one of my books."

beehive.govt.nz - New Zealand to host 2017 World Masters Games

Prime Minister and Tourism Minister John Key officially announced today that New Zealand has won the hosting rights to the 2017 World Masters Games.

"This is a significant win. This international event will draw tens of thousands of people to the country and inject millions of dollars into the economy," says Mr Key.

"This is a vote of confidence in New Zealand as a venue for major international sporting events and, we hope, this is one of many more to be staged here following on from the success of the Rugby World Cup."

The World Masters Games are one of the biggest participatory multi-sports events in the world, and are held every four years. This is the first time they have been held in New Zealand.

Mr Key says the games will boost both the local and national economy.

"We're also expecting to see the hotel and hospitality sectors get a real boost, with international visitors alone to spend an estimated 266,190 nights in New Zealand accommodation."

The 2017 World Masters Games will bring over 35,000 visitors to Auckland for up to 30 different sports, including track and field, basketball, surfing, swimming, cycling and volleyball.
